BIRDS - BUILDING THE TRUST

During this next phase of new pet ownership, as you start spending more time with your bird, you are now beginning to build the trust. Because of the fact that you have now gotten to know and develop a relationship with your bird, you have now learned some of the things he likes and some of the things he dislikes.

You really want to start asking yourself, “What are some things my bird likes and what are some things that make my bird uncomfortable?” By being observant and finding out what your bird likes, and increasing those things, and finding out what your bird does not like, and eliminating those things, you’ll find that the trust will grow.

Remember that different birds have different ways of showing their affection for you and their fear of you. Larger birds such as macaws and cockatoos show their emotions much differently than smaller birds such as finches or lovebirds.

An example: fear in a large bird might be exhibited by stepping on his perch as far away from you as possible or maybe even squawking or screaming. You might also see his feathers standing up on his head and on the nape of his neck. That same fear in smaller birds such as finches may be exhibited by just flying around the cage. As the larger bird begins to calm down, he is now perched in the middle of the cage instead of as far away from you as possible and is screaming and squawking a lot less. You may also begin to see the feathers begin to lie back down. When the small bird begins to calm down, all that flying around the cage lessens as you approach.

Remember too that different birds express their emotions in a variety of ways. Some birds are just a little harder to read.
