YOUR BIRD'S CAGE

CAGE PLACEMENT

I cannot say enough about how important of the placement of the cage is. Remember that the cage is your bird's home, and he must feel secure there.

The room you where you choose to place the cage requires a lot of thought and consideration. What might be a very comfortable and cozy room for you, your dog, and your cat and your family might be quite stressful and frightening for your bird. A room that is quiet and free of other animals and free of drafts is best. Here is one thing you want to think about when it comes to putting a cage next to a window. Placing the cage next to a window that’s not opened, can be a little misleading. Remember that if it is cold outside, the window can act much like a refrigerator and radiate the cold into the bird’s cage. Natural light isn’t nearly as important to your bird as consistent temperature.

Remember too, that the weather can change too. Although during the day it may have been warm and pleasant with the window opened, it could get a lot cooler at night. Beware to keep your bird from drafts and getting cold.

CAGE MAINTENANCE

I think many people take the every day maintenance of their bird cage a little for granted. Sometimes, when we get busy with our lives and time feels a little tight, we might not take the time needed to clean the cage and the dishes. My suggestion is to take just 2 or 3 minutes every morning to at least change the newspaper at the bottom of the cage, clean out the water dish, and add or change food. It really takes such a short period of time and remember this is where your bird lives every day of his life. Even people who train birds in live shows and theme parks always find time to keep the cages clean.

I also suggest you check certain other areas of the cage weekly for any build up of bird droppings. If a caged bird or birds get comfortable standing in a specific area over a long period of time, they normally leave a large present somewhere below them, and possibly on certain parts of the cage.

If you have a certain bird with a diet high in fruit, such as a Mynah Bird, expect a lot of droppings. You might to need to clean other parts of the cage daily, and maybe even twice a day.
