BIRDS - CREATING THE BOND

Can a relationship really be developed with a bird? Absolutely! I have always found birds to be unique and amazing animals, so very much different than dogs and cats. As a trainer of animals for movies, TV shows, and commercials, I’ve trained many different birds --penguins, ravens, seas gulls, pigeons, doves, even hawks and eagles. People that have never had a chance to train birds will not truly understand how intelligent some of them really are. One of my first jobs over 25 years ago was to train birds of prey that included Snowy Owls. Golden Eagles, and Red-Tailed Hawks. I even had the opportunity to help train the Golden Eagle to fly across a theme park in a show 5 to 6 times a day and land on my arm! I’ve trained and worked with many psittacines, which are parrot types of birds. Another job in those early days was to have the opportunity to perform with Fred the Cockatoo from the old “Baretta” TV series. This was a live show that I had done at Universal Studios in Hollywood California in the early 80’s and that the bird was a big hit.

All birds-- just like dogs and cats--need a relationship built on trust. Once the relationship has been developed I am continually amazed by some of the things birds will do to show their excitement. The Double Yellow Headed Amazon and the Yellow-Napped Amazon Parrot are two birds that are not only among the best talking parrots, but there are so many other things they do to express this excitement such as talking, hanging upside-down, or even just the dilation of their pupils.

So much of this is first based on GETTING TO KNOW YOUR BIRD.
