RETRIEVE

This is really probably the most complex of all the behaviors. There are actually about 27 steps to this behavior, and for that reason I highly recommend you learn in the Online Dog Training area. Just click on RETRIEVE.

But what I wanted to do is give you some tips on understanding the Retreive and why it really is one of the most challenging of all behaviors.

It's often funny because so many people tell me that their dog likes to play and bring things to them. They normally respond with, "Oh you don't understand, the dog is trained to bring things to me". I then respond with, "Oh, did you train him to bring it to you?" Their response is, "Well he just started doing it on his own".

Here is my point. The fact that your dog likes to bring things to you is great, and for many pet owners, they are totally fine with that. I certainly would be. But if you want to teach your dog to actually bring something to you when you want him to, he must be trained to do so.

Remember, your dog bringing something to you because he wants to and your dog bringing something to you because he is trained to are two totally different things.

As you will see in the Online Dog Training area, the way this is trained is by placing something in the dog's mouth. The dog is trained to hold it, and then you begin to increase the amount of time he is holding the object. Eventually you will teach the dog to begin taking the object from your hand, lower and lower until he is picking it up off the ground.

This whole process takes from one to three weeks to train, but once it is trained, your dog will pick things up and bring them to you. It is a very cool way to train this, and has worked for 30 years for me!!
