WAVE

Teaching your dog to WAVE can really be a simple behavior to train, but I put this as an Advanced Behavior because I think that there are so many behaviors that should be trained before the WAVE.

You obviously will have taught your dog to SIT before attempting this. When you begin to teach this behavior I recommend you start with your dog in a SITTING position, and get your dog on something elevated.

Make sure you pick a paw that you want to work with, and stay with that paw. One of the biggest mistakes pet owners make is switching back and forth to different paws. The verbal cue that you will give the animal can be anything you want. Just make sure that you stick with whatever word you choose. Most trainers that train animals for movies, TV shows, and commercials use either the word "foot" or "paw".

What you want to start doing is touching your dog's foot, at the same time giving the verbal cue. There are a few things that will or will not happen. Your dog may offer his foot immediately, and if so, you are in luck. This behavior will be very easy to train.

You may touch the foot and nothing happens. If nothing happens, just lightly pick the foot up, as you give the verbal cue, and follow that with a reward. You are going to want to repeat this. With this behavior spend a minute or two on it and move on to something else. Over the course of time and after a few days your dog will begin to start "offereing" his foot to you just before you pick it up because he knows he will be getting a reward. Once this happens you are making great progress.

Eventually you want to get to a place where you are moving your hand a little farther away, so that the dog is really responding to the verbal and visual cue.

As you dog begins to understand you can get farther and farther away until the behavior is trained.
