YOUR DOG'S TEETH

Brushing your dog's teeth should not be something that you do not look forward to. On the contrary, it should be something that is a lot of fun for both you and your dog. Just like training your dog, you need to take things slowly and one step at a time. Just like dog training, you want to reward your dog with a nice tactile reward which is petting your dog.

TOOLS

The two to three things you are going to need will be a toothbrush, toothpaste and a rinse. There are large variety of pet toothpastes on the market today. I have heard of people using human toothpaste, but make sure you use a pet toothpaste. I have heard that toothpastes designed for people can actually upset your dog's stomach. For dogs with more serious gum diseases, fluoride treatments or toothpastes may be prescribed by your veterinarian. (Please do not use any human fluoride containing toothpastes on your pet.) Remember too, that flavored toothpastes can make tooth brushing more acceptable to pets.

Like the toothpaste, you want to use toothbrushes designed specifically for pets. You will find that they are smaller, ultra-soft, and have a somewhat different shape. They also have what are called "Finger tooth brushes" that do not have a handle, but fit over your finger, may be easier for some people to use.

If this is something you want to try, just use those tools and brush your dog's teeth the same way you would brush your own teeth.. in a vertical motion.

TIPS

FOOD - Most veterinarians will tell you that if you feet a dry food, just the action of the dry food on the teeth are a great way of keeping your dog's teeth clean.

TOYS - If your dog is a very aggressive chewer, try to find toys that are not so hard that he could possibly break a tooth on them. You may also want to find a toy he cannot get his mouth around. Rawhide or other chews that soften as the dog chews are another option. Always supervise your dog when he is chewing on a toy.
