THE RIGHT FOOD

I think it's kind of funny because if you speak to some breeders, they might tell you that you should only feed a certain brand of dog food. Some might say you should feed only dry food, and others might say you should feed only wet food. The great thing about this is that everyone has their opinion. You really need to take it upon yourself to do all the necessary research, and most importantly, find out what is the best for your dog. This includes asking your veterinarian.

BRINGING A NEW DOG HOME - Switching Food

No matter where you get your dog from, be sure to keep him on the same diet he is familiar with, at least for these first few days. He’s got enough to deal with already—the last thing he needs is to be presented with something unfamiliar to eat when he’s hungry. (Now is a good time to establish a feeding schedule, too.) If you do want to make a change in your dog's diet, make the switch slowly. Keep him on what he’s used to for about a week. Then for the next three days, try a 50/50 diet: half of the old food, half of the new. If that works out, start presenting him with 75 percent new food, 25 percent old. If that’s successful, you can then eliminate the old diet altogether.

INGREDIENTS

If you’re not quite sure what to feed your dog, understand that there really is a difference among the many choices available. Begin by checking the ingredients list for whatever brand you think might appeal to your dog. If there are more of certain ingredients you’re looking for, you’ll find the right food for your pet. Again, if you have any questions about the right food for your dog, just check with your veterinarian. I will tell you that one of the drawbacks of feeding only a wet type of food though, is with this type of food, the dog does not get a chance to clean their teeth the way they would with dry food. A suggestion might be to feed a combination of wet and dry if you really want to feed wet food.

I also like to vary the amount of food I feed each day. For example, if your dog averages 3 cups a day, I would feed 4 cups for a few days, 2 cups for a few days, and 3 cups for a few days. Sometimes changing it up like that can keep it a little more interesting for your dog.
