FADING THE TREATS

Treats and balls are great motivators for teaching your dog new behaviors, and a great way to make it fun. So are using treats too. Personally, I like using the most motivating thing for that particular animal to teach the animal the behavior. But down the road, once the behavior is trained, what some of the best animal trainers have learned is that it is not necessarily about giving the animal the treat; nstead it is all about the communication that was given to the animal that what he did was acceptable.

This is accomplished by "fading out the treat". By fading out the treat, the animal simply learns that there are a variety of different things that may happen when he does something correctly. The most important thing is that the trainer is no longer relying on a treat.

The way I like to start is once the behavior is trained, I begin combining a tactile reward with the food reward. This way the animal becomes conditioned to accepting the tactile and food rewards together. After a while you can begin to give a tactile reward by itself 10% of the time, and 90% of the time still giving a treat. After a while you can start to fade out the treat even more. Just remember, the more unpredictable you are, the more interesting you keep it for your dog.
