CLICKER TRAINING

Before I begin, let me say that I totally understand that there are a literally hundreds of books, DVDS, and articles out there on clicker training, and many of them are actually written by some very fine trainers. One thing I found out many years ago was that there is more than one way to train a dog, and more than one way to use a clicker. What made me write these pages was that I have actually heard from many individuals who have read some books or watched the DVDS, or who have learned from some of these trainers. After listening to some of these people and visiting some websites that go extensively go into clicker training, I have found that there are some differences in the way I use a clicker and the way they use a clicker. In this area of my site, I will give you an idea of what a clicker represents in the marine mammal community, and how it relates to training dogs. I will also go into the major differences between my style and what you might have read or watched.

If you are a person that has learned from any of these trainers, please understand that I am in no way telling you to change what you are doing. This area of my site is to give you an understanding of what I have learned, and what I do. Understand that there are numerous ways to train a dog, and many ways to use a clicker as well.

I feel that I can speak on this for a number of reasons. The first is that I have a lot of experience training and caring for marine mammals, and even won the International Marine Animal Trainers Association (I.M.A.T.A.) behavior of the year award in 1986 for a behavior I trained on two Atlantic bottle-nosed dolphins where they shot me out of the water on their noses. Here are a few pictures of that behavior taken in 1986:
