YOUR DOG'S STATIONARY POSITION

There is a pre-training exercise that I recommend to pet owners with dogs that are very energetic and exciteable. These can be dogs that are also classified as warmer colored dogs like the ORANGES and the REDS.

What I suggest owners do even before they go to train their dog is to put on the collar they intend on using for training. This might be an alternative training collar, a head harness, a chain collar, or a pinch collar.

  • You are going to want to be in a place with the least amount of distractions as possible.
  • Put the dog on the left side of you with the dog's nose either parallel with, or in back of your leg
  • Most importantly, make sure there is always slack in the leash. If the dog pulls, give a correction.
  • The dog can do one of three things and that is sit, stand, or lie down
  • You are not telling the dog to do anything
  • The rules are the dog can do any of one of those three things, but CANNOT pull on the leash

If you think about this from your dog's point of view, we are simply eliminating the dog pulling, or feeling like he can have any tension on the leash. Try doing this for 15-20 minute periods of time, and once the dog is OK in a place with few distractions, begin taking him to places with more distractions.

TRAINING TOOLS

If you are training a dog that is going to want to pull a lot as you are standing there, it is a good idea to have something that will give you as much control as possible. As far as leashes go, I would highly recommend a very strong leather leash that is comfortable on your hands, and also strong for a dog that might really want to pull.

I would also recommend any kind of collar that will give you optimum control for RED or ORANGE DOGS such as:

Alternative Training Collar
Check Choke Collars
Titan Chain Collar
Control Ease Head Collar
Remington Nylon Check Cord
Control Ease Clicker
Titan Pinch Collar

If you are dealing with BLUE, GREEN, OR YELLOW dog, you will probably want to use your dog's adjustable nylon collar that he wears.
