SIT UP

I have seen this behavior trained a few different ways. Here is the way I like to teach it. First make sure that your dog is trained to SIT. Hold a piece of food over his head, just where he can take it from that SITTING position. Get your dog condtioned to start taking the treat a little higher so he has to reach a bit, still in the SITTING position.

Once he is consistent, hold the treat only about an inch higher, so that he really has to reach for it. In order for him to take it, without leaving the SITTING position, he most likely will have to raise his front paws off the ground. As he does this, you can give a verbal cue like "SIT UP". If he does, make sure you reward him in that SITTING UP position.

The next step is looking for consistency. Is he SITTING UP for the treat every time you put it over his head? If so, you can they start to fade out the treat and just use your hand, still saying "SIT UP".

Once your dog is consistent, you can move your hand farther and farther away.
