SOFT, TIMID, & SHY DOGS

These are the dogs that are shy or have some type of fear. Dogs like this can vary a lot in personality too. You may find one dog that is a little shy, and you may see another that is afraid of many things. Most of time when we see an animal with fear, it often comes from something that might have been brought on by the dog’s past. This could have been caused by a variety of things but the most common causes are either being not properly cared for, abused, improper training, or exposure to things that scared him or her.

With the dog with this type of personality, you need to understand something and that is dogs have a very good memory. They especially have a very good memory about things that have scared them at one time or another. Remember that this dog that is going to need some time and patience from the owner especially in the beginning of training. Even when you get a dog like this, one of the first things you want to do is identify the fears, and try to eliminate them from the very beginning.

Unlike high strung dogs, you are going to want to incorporate anything in the training session that will motivate the dog. When it comes to treats, try finding something the dog really likes, and try to limit the time the dog gets the treat only to training sessions.

Your voice is also an important factor. By having a more upbeat tone to your voice, you will be amazed how much you can really bring out the personality of your dog. On the other hand, sometimes just the tone of a firm voice will make the shy dog more shy. You want to really avoid going that direction. Try keeping a friendly and happy voice.

Although I do not use this type of training much, clicker training is a great motivational tool in training soft and shy dogs too.

All dogs look to us for guidance and reassurance, but in the beginning of training, a soft and shy dogs needs it most.
