DOGS & KIDS - DEVELOPING A RELATIONSHIP

You’ve now had your dog for about a week or two and gotten to know and understand him. You can probably also see some changes taking place within him, too. Here are some things you want do do with your child together. Take notice of these things too.

  • Is he starting to seem comfortable with his surroundings?
  • Does he look forward to being with you?
  • Is he excited when you get home from school?

If so, that’s great because that means the bonding process has begun!

During the next week, as you start spending more time together, you should be paying close attention to what he likes and what makes him happy. You should also to be a little more aware of things that scare him or make him uncomfortable. By identifying these good and bad things, you will really build on the relationship. Here are some areas to consider:

  • What is your dog like socially?
  • Does he like playthings?
  • Does he prefer a certain treat?
  • Is he content to just lie around and be petted? If so, where is his favorite spot to be petted? Are there places where he doesn’t want to be touched?
  • Does he like taking walks?
  • Is your dog nervous?
  • Does your dog have any fears or get distracted easily?

You want to begin to incorporate the things your dog likes, and eliminate the things your dog does not like. Once this happens and you notice the bond starting to build, you are ready to start building the trust.
