HOW MUCH EXERCISE?

So how much exercise is the right amount for your dog? Well that really depends upon your dog and it really depends how old your dog was when you first got him. I want to give you a few examples of some things you want to take into consideration.

There are a lot of people that have many misconceptions about exercise. One of the biggest ones seems to be that some people think that in order for a dog to get the proper amount of exercise, he needs a lot of space, or needs a large yard. This is entirely untrue, as New York City pet owners have proven. Most of them live in apartments, yet they make it a point to give the animal the proper amount of exercise. I do not think just because a pet owner puts the animal in the backyard for 10 hours you can classify it as getting the proper exercise. If you are living in an apartment you just need to make the time, and get out and walk your dog a few times a day. You be the judge of how much exercise the animal needs. New York City pet owners understand this, and that is the price they pay to own a dog.

What dicates how much exercise an animal will need? Many times the amount of exercise is dictated upon the breed. For example, Greyhounds, Borzois, and Solukis are couch potatoes. They do not require close to the amount of exercise as an Australian Shepherd, Labrador Retriever, or Border Collie.

Something else that would dictate the amount of exercise would also be the animal's history. If you just adopted an adult Border Collie, and it had been running loose on 2 acres for the past three years with it's prior owners, then I would not recommend keeping the animal in an apartment. However, if you just got a Border Collie puppy, there is nothing wrong with keeping the animal in an apartment as long as you can give it the proper amount of exercise. Dogs are great about getting conditioned to living in different living conditions.

The best thing to do if you have a new dog is to ask a breeder or one of the employees at the humane society, animal shelter, or rescue group.
