Birds-Food and Water

FOOD

I think of all the animals, birds probably have the most diverse diet. You can ask any bird owner and whether they have a small canary or a large macaw, they both like to eat a variety of things. What is so great about it is that you can really tell how much they enjoy it too.

Ask yourself this question: “How important is food in my life, how much do I like variety, and how important is a proper diet?” If you are like me, food and diet is very important. It is not only important for me to live, but I like variety in my diet and look forward to the change each day. This makes eating fun. The same thing applies to birds. You’ll want to talk to your veterinarian, but I recommend adding very small amounts of different seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables a day. These things will change depending on the type of bird you own.

One of the greatest things about adding a pleasant variety to the food is that your bird will look forward to seeing you each day because you have something interesting that your bird wants and enjoys.

WATER

I think this may be one of the things that gets the most overlooked of all things in the bird cage. It is essential that the water dish be changed every day. Many pet owners make the mistake of thinking that water only needs to be changed every week or so. Remember that there are a lot of things that can grow in the water that you might not see and might not be healthy for your bird. Even with a smaller bird, remember that a small bird does not need to ingest as much bacteria or parasites to get as sick as a large parrot, because of its small size.

By taking the time and simply changing the water on a daily basis, you eliminate the chance of any algae or bacteria growing in the dish.

A great rule of thumb is to change it on a daily basis.
