Clicker Training 7
SHOULD I USE A CLICKER ON ALL DOGS?
One of the other things that I have read on a few of clicker training websites are that some trainers believe that that clickers should be used in training with every dog. I have to tell you that I do not agree with this.
One of the reasons I wrote "What Color is Your Dog?" was that not all techniques work with all dogs. There are many different colors of dogs you can use a clicker with. With an Orange Dog that leans toward Yellow, you might want to use a clicker with. Yellow dogs, for example are great dogs to use them with. A clicker can be a great training tool with some dogs that are a little apprehensive like the Green Dogs that might need a little more motivation. A clicker can also come in handy with dogs that are extremely shy and timid like a Blue Dog as well.
On the other hand, with some of the warmer colored dogs such as the Orange Dog leaning toward Red, or Red Dogs, I would not use a clicker with. Why is this? We know that the clicker gets the dog into you and the training session. It also has the tendency to excite the dog too. With a Red Dog or Orange Dog do you want to increase the animal's energy level? You actually want to calm the dog down. This is one of the reasons I would not recommend a clicker with these colored dogs.
